As the weather begins to warm up, we are reminded that Spring Break is almost here. With it comes a taste of summer to revive us all as we take a break from cramming, studying, and trying to push through hallway crowds to get to our next classes. Keep yourself from being cooped up in the house wishing you were out spending it right, and instead try some of these ideas to make it your best Spring Break yet.
Old film-lovers can catch a movie Friday-Sunday at the Dos Lagos Stadium Theater starting at 8 p.m. for only $4. Admission also comes with a $4 voucher for concessions. Don’t miss out on $5 Movie Tuesdays at the theater where any show is $5 all day. Night owls can hold off until midnight to experience a viewing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” held every Saturday for $11.50. Audience participation is graciously welcomed and highly encouraged.
For those seeking a little more adventure and willing to spare a full tank, Sundays in Los Angeles serve as Jet Rag’s “$1 Sale” day. Located on 825 N. La Brea Avenue, this thrift shop is one of the biggest in the city. Open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., every item is only $1 regardless of what it is. On your way out, stop for the best hot dog and chili fries in L.A. at Pink’s Hot Dogs, located only one minute away from the store. Be prepared for a moderately long wait in line, but their food is worth waiting for.
You absolutely cannot leave L.A. without stopping at the Griffith Observatory, which has free entry day or night for the most amazing sights of the city. Open Tuesday through Sunday until 10 p.m., the Observatory has a clear view of the Hollywood Hills, the Hollywood sign, and an entire view of Los Angeles. Enjoy a night under the starts on April 5, 2014 at one of the monthly Public Star Parties where you can meet with astronomy volunteers and watch the stars, moon, and planets through telescopes brought by the organizations specifically for guest use.
Another must-stop in L.A. is for those who shop the best of urban-style fashion. Fairfax Avenue is home to some of the biggest street-wear brand stores including Supreme, Diamond Supply, The Hundreds, and the Odd Future Store where some members of Odd Future can even be spotted hanging out from time to time.
Slightly more local, the Fox Theater Pomona is buzzing with a new artist line-up for spring including Tyler the Creator (04/05), Foster the People (04/08), and Ellie Goulding (04/15). Tickets range from $28-$50, and are available online at foxpomona.com. Located 25 miles East of Los Angeles and 20 miles West of Riverside, The Glass House in Pomona is another concert venue worth checking out which has artists like A$AP Ferg performing in the bear future.
And of course, if all else fails, grab a group of friends, your swimsuit, and a towel and head to the beach for some sand and sun. For bonfires and games of beach volleyball, choose Huntington or Newport. Visit Santa Monica Pier for food, rides, and shops all atop a perfect seaside view. Or try Venice Beach for a walk amongst some of the most interesting sights and people. Just be sure to head back home before the sun goes down.
No matter how you choose to spend these next two weeks off, remember that it’s not what you do, but who you spend it with that makes for a good time. Class of 2014 Seniors enjoy your last Spring Break as high school students as we continue our countdown to graduation.
